The Industrial Revolution Is Over.
We Won.
Esat C. Başak
April 9 – May 29, 2010
NON is pleased to present Esat C. Başak’s exhibition The Industrial Revolution Is Over. We Won. from 9 April to 29 May 2010.
In Başak’s collages, assemblages, installations and gmts -genetically modified toys- subject matter and material overlap: the use of often immediately recognizable objects, icons, images and text picked out from everyday life render the work all the more striking.
The established order of the media, of art history, of design and ultimately language is unforgivingly dismantled and ingeniously reconstructed to release a new dynamic of design with many aspects: at times disturbing, at times hilarious, these works succeed in evoking both a feeling of timeless familiarity and the promise of a parallel world of creative independence.
On this new stage where the criteria of censorship appear to lose their foothold, good taste is dissolved and grammar is turned on itself, and we witness the emergence of a new set of actors: A monkey furiously attacking The Origin of Species; a group of elegant, mechanical praying mantes and friends that have roots both in the insect world and the waste basket; a solemn figure in contemplation in the midst of unlikely landscapes, and classical nudes with contemporary partners in almost seamless unison.
The Industrial Revolution Is Over. We Won. places the conditions of our perception in a new context, inflicting a refreshing blow on our thought processes and proposing the motto: Creativity is the mystery of freedom.
