Emel Kurhan
Travelling Without Moving
March 19 – April 23, 2011
NON is pleased to present Emel Kurhan’s first solo exhibition Travelling Without Moving from 19 March 2011 to 23 April 2011.
In Travelling Without Moving, Kurhan explores travel and the traveller. The idea of travel and the experience of the traveller have deeply interested Kurhan since her childhood and she is fascinated with post-travel stories and how those stories send the listeners off to virtual travels by capturing their imagination. Already well established in the world of design, the artist now explores in her art the possibilities of her longtime materials such as embroidery, plexiglas and neon.
Describing herself as a storyteller rather than a designer, Emel Kurhan believes in her many similarities with an elderly Takawati performing Saladin stories and Baibars legends for crowds packing historic coffeehouses of old Damascus.
